This exhibition brings together over twenty contemporary artists who are reconsidering art's relationship to the Classical tradition. While these artists seek inspiration in Classical forms, they also propose ways to rethink why such seemingly played out models remain a constant source of popular and scholarly inspiration. From reanimating the familiar images and reproductions that flood contemporary image circulation, to reconfiguring the Classical body to fit new ideals of beauty, to pitting humor against the inherited gravitas of the Classical tradition, they are recasting old models and forms in mediums that undermine notions of permanence and solidity.
As the title of the exhibition suggests, these artists are exploring what it means to make work “out of time.”
