American Treasures From the Farnsworth

Apr 4 2015 - Oct 29 2017

This selection of works from the museum's collection includes a group of works that were shown in an exhibition this winter at the Society of Four Arts in Palm Beach, Florida. Among them are some of the museum's best known works, revealing the museum's strong holdings centered on its mission to celebrate Maine's role in American art. In practical terms, that means the Farnsworth has focused its collection and exhibition activities around those artists who have worked or lived in Maine. Since the mid-nineteenth century Maine has been both host and inspiration to many of America's most noted painters. Drawn here by the state's physical beauty, they found subjects for their work that sustained them and, in some cases, defined their careers. The museum's earliest acquisitions thus often depicted the harbors, streams, fields, and forests of Maine, as well as boat builders, fishermen, farmers, and vacationers along the state's scenic coastline. This installation celebrates the important place Maine holds in the history of American art.
