Ed Fella: Free Work in Due Time

Exhibition Website

Jan 14 2017 - Oct 29 2017

Ed Fella works at the intersection of art and design, using his personal projects to examine the conventions and idiosyncrasies of human communication. His meticulously hand-drawn lettering and poetic wordplay stake a claim for self-expression in design. As both a designer and educator, he has influenced a generation of students, encouraging them to think more broadly and to initiate independent bodies of work.

Free Work in Due Time centers on Fella’s After the Fact flyers, a series of announcements created after the lectures and events they describe had already taken place. Freed from restrictions and deadlines of professional practice, Fella used the flyers to explore vernacular and historic typography, artistic and literary traditions, and other interests. The installation also includes Fella’s posters, photographs, and sketchbooks, demonstrating how these ideas and preoccupations run throughout his work.
