Marking the Infinite features the works of nine of Australia’s leading Aboriginal women artists. While they have established reputations in Australia, for many this exhibition represents their American debut. Hailing from remote areas across the island continent, these nine artists are revered matriarchs, commanding leadership roles and using art to empower their respective communities.

The artworks made by these women are proud assertions of who they are and represent their pride in their communities.Their works offer a glimpse into the diverse contemporary art practice of Aboriginal Australia, with subject matter ranging from remote celestial bodies and the native bush plum’s tiny flowers to venerable crafts traditions and women’s ceremonies.

Every mark bears testament to natural and cosmological cycles. They are marks upon the infinite, asserting our shared humanity and differences in experiencing and valuing the same planet.  This strength of vision is immediately evident in works that shimmer and swirl, that assert their authority like lightning bolts, or sparkle like the night sky.

The works in Marking the Infinite are drawn from the collection of Debra and Dennis Scholl, Miami-based collectors and philanthropists.

Whether or not you go, the exhibition catalog,  Marking the Infinite: Contemporary Women Artists from Aboriginal Australia, provides a lively, in-depth look at these nine women on the vanguard of Aboriginal Australian art. Comprised of a series of illustrated essays, this book brings to life a wide array of artistic practices, each attempting to grapple with the most fundamental questions of existence. Written by leading art historians, anthropologists, curators, and other experts in the field, these essays provide a penetrating look at one of today’s most dynamic artistic movements.
