Patty Rogers: Joys Within Reach

I use the remembered outside world and contrast the observed inner world to interpret and make sense of things. I start with words. Titles are important to me. I see them as invitations, launching points for visual ideas. Using natural forms as “figures” to create suggested narratives, I translate verbal ideas into visual images with color, collage, layers of paper and organic matter.

I think of papers as sustainable materials, both ancient and new. Using a variety of papers, I build my ideas and surfaces with paper collage. I then sketch my ideas onto the collage with conte crayon and use acrylic paint and printmaking techniques to build transparency and opacity. The surfaces feel tactile and textural, and ideas small and large are discoverable in the surface.
