Frye Art Museum

Seattle, WA

To: Seattle | Subject: Personal embraces the idea that a museum and its collection are living entities in constant transformation. The exhibition brings together a selection of works of contemporary art acquired by the Board of Trustees of the Frye Art Museum between 2009 and 2016 during the directorship of Jo-Anne Birnie Danzker. In this period, the Frye collected works by international and Seattle-based artists. These include significant works commissioned by the Frye Art Museum in conjunction with exhibitions of artists and artist collectives. To: Seattle | Subject: Personal reflects artistic practice in the first decades of the twenty-first century.

To: Seattle | Subject: Personal reveals that contemporary art in Seattle is distinguished by interdisciplinary practice and collaboration between artists in loosely formed groups. Presented together for the first time the art objects and installations on view share overarching formal and thematic concerns that cut across traditional aesthetic categories. Many of the exhibition's featured artists have cultivated cross-disciplinary, post-studio creative practices that reflect recent developments in contemporary art. The exhibition offers a variety of perspectives on the social, political, and cultural flux shaping Seattle and the global community, addressing the complexities, discrepancies, and contradictions of issues such as unrestrained urban growth, social and racial inequity, and the threat of natural catastrophe. Together the works in the exhibition express the shared concerns of the artists and citizens of Seattle while imagining alternative visions for the future.
