Looking Away: Portraits from the Collection presents a selection of more than fifty photographs drawn from the Boca Raton Museum of Art’s collection. Photography is a medium known for its capacity to expose and freeze a moment. Capturing the human presence through portraiture has been one of photography’s central themes since its invention in the mid-nineteenth century.
The idea of a portrait often manifests in different forms; some are composed in formal settings, others are documentation of historical events and some are informal snapshots of the happenstance – candid moments from everyday life. The common thread through many of these photographs is the subject’s desire to be looked at, although many of the subjects evade the unforgiving gaze of the camera. This exhibition traces the structure of human relationships through the works of Edward Steichen, Walker Evans, Garry Winogrand, Robert Frank, Brassaï, Helmut Newton and Mary Ellen Mark among others.
