For this solo exhibition Kathy Aoki will create an installation that addresses the worldwide obsession with Hello Kitty and other “super cute” commercial ventures that have dominated the market targeting young girls. As an extension of her current theme The Museum of Historical Makeovers, the Formidable Fragments will be presented in the context of a simulated museum set in the future.
Aoki received her MFA in printmaking in 1994 from Washington University in St. Louis. She is the incoming Chair of Art and Art History at Santa Clara University in Santa Clara, California. Her work is in permanent collections at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Special Artist Book Collection and the Mills College Special Collections among others.
