Paul Klee in Color

Exhibition Website

May 14 2016 - Oct 30 2016

This selection of sixteen significant paintings and watercolors by Swiss-born modernist Paul Klee explores his use of color, which was both intuitive and theoretical for the profoundly experimental artist.

Works in the exhibition range from a delicate 1917 miniature to a luminous landscape built from blocks of color in 1940, and include several pieces inspired by the artist’s travels. Continuing SFMOMA’s tradition of exhibiting different aspects of the artist’s work, Paul Klee in Color is the forty-fifth exhibition dedicated to the artist since the renowned chemist and playwright Carl Djerassi first placed his holdings of Klee’s work at the museum in the 1980s.
