Method Order Metric

Exhibition Website

Feb 4 2016 - May 8 2016

Drawn from the National Academy’s permanent collection, Method Order Metric considers the systematic approaches that artists define and use within their practice, and how these are ingrained in the process, form and meaning of the work.

While the works featured represent a wide range of artistic movements and practices including Geometric Abstraction, Minimalism, Pattern and Decoration, Conceptual Art and Industrial Design, a systematic plan underlies each, with artists employing mathematical concepts, formal constraints, cultural hierarchies, and other parameters to shape the visual result of the object.

Featuring work by Ann Hamilton, Valerie Jaudon, Joyce Kozloff, Robert Mangold, Thomas Nozkowski, Dorothea Rockburne, and James Siena, among others, this exhibition highlights commonalities found in each artist’s approach to art making that reflect our ways and means of understanding the world around us.
