Francisco Toledo: Paper Fables

Exhibition Website

May 5 2022 - Aug 21 2022

Over the course of many decades, Oaxacan artist Francisco Toledo (known to his many adherents as El Maestro) created a prolific body of graphics and paintings whose imagery drew upon stories from Mexico’s ancient past – as well as its present. At once humorous, dark, ironic, and erotic, Toledo’s images visualize fables, moralistic and explicatory narratives about humans and animals.

This exhibition presents works from an early period in Toledo’s career, primarily centered on the artist’s works on paper during the late 1960s and early 1970s. These works, donated to the museum from the collection of Mary and Hal Douthit, offer us a window into the capacious visual imagination of one of the most beloved artists of recent Mexican art history.
