Aug 19 2021 - Aug 31 2022

TMA’s Asian Art collection encompasses major forms and periods from ancient times through the present, representing extensive cultural roots from throughout the vast Asian continent. In this exhibition, selections of artworks with origins from China, Japan, Korea, Tibet, or Thailand are on view, dating from 500AD to the present.

This exhibition examines the connections that can be made through media, place of origin, and the time works are created. Included are groupings of items that indicate status and wealth, everyday objects, comparative pottery through time, examples of global trade and influence, and contemporary representations of work made in the current time.

Asian artists working today, whether creating art within their country of birth, as immigrants in new locations, or using various global platforms, are inspired by their heritage as well as the world around them. Asian art is not a concept of the past, but has viable, changing, and relevant forms that act in conversation with the arts and communities worldwide.
