Artis—Encounters Highlights from the Permanent Collection

Exhibition Website

Sep 2018 - Jun 2019

Artis—Encounters features a selection of works from The Baker Museum’s permanent collection by American, European and Mexican artists. Selected for their aesthetic, stylistic and thematic attributes, this group of paintings and sculptures acquires new meaning in the context of Hayes Hall, and in the company of this fall’s new exhibitions, as well as sculptures on the grounds of the Kimberly K. Querrey and Louis A. Simpson Cultural Campus.

Artis—Encounters shares some of the finest works in the collection and highlights recent acquisitions on view for the first time, such as L’Age d’Or: Ses Soleilles (The Golden Age: The Suns), a monumental triptych by American painter Stanton MacDonald Wright. The diverse visual vocabularies employed by the artists shown respond to varying backgrounds, yet the formal and aesthetic resonance between the works suggests common interests and sensibilities.

By displaying paintings and sculptures in areas of Hayes Hall, and in proximity to the monumental pieces on view outdoors, an artistic dialogue ensues. The blue stripes in Robert Motherwell’s Open No. 174: In Red and Blue Stripes evokes the repetitive curves of Yaacov Agam’s Gateway to the Arts, while the fragmented form in Rufino Tamayo’s Desnudo en blanco (White Nude) contrasts with the smooth surface of Hanneke Beaumont’s Bronze 73 (L’Ennui)

Artis—Encounters invites visitors to discover connections between the visual and performing arts, foster dialogue about ideas and enjoy unexpected encounters with beautiful works of art.
