Sandy Sokoloff: Emanation

Exhibition Website

Mar 9 2019 - Jun 16 2019

The large acrylic paintings comprising this exhibit, each approximately six feet high and nine feet wide, are from the series “Sephirot (The Quabalistic Spheres),” Sandy Sokoloff’s central creative endeavor for the past 40 years.

About this work, Sokoloff has said, “Although I am not an observant Jew, I have been strongly influenced by my cultural heritage. As a child, I loved to draw, and early on my grandfather told me, ‘a Jew may never create an image of G-d’.  Still, the Kabballah describes Sephirot as the manifestations of G-d that allow Him to appear in both the metaphysical and physical universe.  Investigating the paradox of an image that both appears and does not appear gives impetus to my work.”
