John Rickus and Carlie Todor Rickus present light as art object and as a partner in installation and performance. In this installation, the artists will assemble a light sculpture with data that informs its color and movement created by the viewer. This installation takes simple sculptural objects and scans them to create a light-art piece, a scan obtaining data for aesthetic display. The light intensity, color and texture changes the phenomenology in the space and with it new motivation to move.

The viewer experiences a light-art piece in a darkened room. A cluster of cylindrical tubes, three inches in diameter and four feet long, create a light sculpture approximately 16’ in diameter. The sculpture hangs from the ceiling in the center of the room, lighting up in varied colors and movements. On a small tabletop situated in a dark corner of the space, a collection of solid-colored blocks in varied shapes and sizes rests on a turntable. At first glance, the viewer may not connect the tiny art piece and the large environmental light sculpture. If/when they do, they will discover that they participate in the installation by dismantling and reassembling the tiny sculpture. The viewer creates a new topography that is scanned and output into light.
