More than eighty original works by the beloved picture book author and illustrator Eric Carle.
Famous for his soulful representations of insects, animals, and fables, the artist traditionally illustrates daytime scenes by depicting figures against white backgrounds. To create nighttime scenes, however, he paints his backgrounds in deep blues and swirling indigoes. The works in this exhibition focus on Carle’s dreamy nighttime scenes and the stories they tell about twinkling stars, blinking fireflies, and the gently smiling moon. The exhibition spans the artist’s long career with selections from more than thirty Carle books.
Highlights include illustrations from The Very Hungry Caterpillar (1969), Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me (1986), The Very Quiet Cricket (1990), and Draw Me a Star (1992). In addition to the artworks, visitors of all ages will enjoy hands-on interactives, artmaking activities, and a reading library equipped with a range of Carle’s books.
