Aug 2 2019 - Nov 2 2019

What began as very humble printed images in the eighteenth century, expanded into complex prints that became a dominant tradition in Japanese art. These works, that explore numerous subjects, also focused on the natural and cultivated world. At times they included elements of daily life fused with modern architecture. When these prints were first seen in nineteenth century France, they fascinated the artistic community. Contemporary artists began to adopt the compositional elements employed in the Japanese prints which figured prominently in French and American Impressionist painting.
