Visual Voices: Contemporary Chickasaw Art

Exhibition Website

Mar 2 2019 - Jun 2 2019

With Visual Voices: Contemporary Chickasaw Art, the Museum continues our commitment to social engagement and racial equity. Visual Voices showcases the diversity of expression in contemporary Chickasaw art across different media and multiple indigenous perspectives. We are honored to connect our audiences with a group of artists from the Chickasaw Nation who represent the creative excellence of a tribe with deep roots in Mississippi.

While many of the artists hail from Oklahoma, their work flows from the cultural and historical traditions of the Chickasaw people and the Mississippi homeland. In the bicentennial exhibition Picturing Mississippi: Land of Plenty, Pain, and Promise, which was on view from December 9, 2017, until July 8, 2018, the Museum featured three beautiful works of pottery by Chickasaw artist Joanna Underwood Blackburn. We are excited to host a larger exhibition that includes Blackburn among a group of 15 leading contemporary Chickasaw artists.
