Modern Roots: A Survey of Latin American Art from the Collection

Exhibition Website

Oct 13 2018 - Dec 23 2018

In celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15 – Oct. 15), the museum will showcase objects from its collection by modern and contemporary artists hailing from the diverse Latin American cultures of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Uruguay. The exhibition will focus on both figurative traditions and innovative explorations of abstraction, with surreal motifs and conceptual considerations rounding out the overview. Artists include those well known in the history of art, such as Roberto Matta-Echaurren, Alfredo Jaar, Ana Mendieta, Beatriz Milhazes, and Rufino Tamayo, as well as those recently emerging or re-discovered. The exhibition as a whole honors the myriad contributions of Latin communities to the visual arts.
