European Masterworks: The Phillips Collection

Exhibition Website

Apr 6 2019 - Jul 14 2019

This exhibition presents a selection of the most iconic paintings and sculptures from The Phillips Collection, America’s first museum of modern art, which opened in 1921 in Washington, D.C.

Arranged thematically from the early-19th through the mid-20th century, these incomparable European Impressionist, Post-Impressionist and Expressionist artworks exemplify the distinctive eye of collector Duncan Phillips. Phillips believed that “the really good things of all ages and all periods could be brought together … with such delightful results that we recognize the special affinities of artists.”

Viewers will encounter a stunning array from the 19th century by Courbet, Daumier, Ingres and Manet in dialogue with Impressionist and Post-Impressionist masterpieces by Cézanne, Degas, Monet, Rodin, Sisley and van Gogh. Central to the exhibition are important works by Bonnard, de Staël, Kandinsky, Matisse, Morandi and Picasso, artists who shaped the look of the 20th century.
