Jamey Grimes studied both art and biology, and his large-scale sculptural installations are a blend of these two interests. Grimes melts, shapes, and transforms simple corrugated plastic (sign plastic) to mimic the appearance of natural phenomena: the way light filters through water, the patterns of coral reefs, or the shapes outlined by canopies of tree branches. Playing with line and gesture, Grimes crafts organic, undulating forms of material and shadow that become what he explains are “fragments of a conversation with nature. The dialogue can be hostile, soothing, or both. Storms, trees, and the sea personify heightened emotion, wisdom, and awareness.”
