Timothy Clark is a contemporary artist who accepts and pays homage to the notion that art has a history, a history that informs our ever-changeable now. He does so in the crepuscular emptiness of a Spanish baroque church, in an eroded light-inflected beaux-arts façade animating the venerable Metropolitan Museum, or the languor of a lush California courtyard and glimpsed aslant in the cleansing showers of a dissolving New York cityscape. Then, too, Clark knows that if a modern gas station visually interrupts our journey along a lonely highway at night, its internally lit sign records a visual collision between nature and culture. Clark reminds us that watercolor is about how time looks and feels, special moments that can simultaneously resonate with a consoling past but be brought close to our reverberating present through a master’s knowing touch.
