Focus on Realism: From the Butler Collection

Exhibition Website

Aug 5 2018 - Oct 14 2018

This exhibition highlights a number of major works which in technique, subject matter and basic philosophy celebrate the rich tradition of American Realism, offering a capsulized look at the museum’s realist holdings

The Butler collection attempts to represent every significant American art movement and the artists who played a major role in their development. But the collection’s main focus has long been what might termed “Mainstream Realism”, that brand of narrative painting which leads back the academies of the 19th century. While you will find excellent examples of more contemporary approaches such as photo realism, the preponderance of work can be categorized as traditional.
