Oct 8 2018 - Jan 11 2019

Organized by the Syracuse University Art Collection, North and South features photographs taken by photographer Berenice Abbott as she traveled along US Route 1 in the Summer of 1954. Abbott took over twenty-four hundred negatives during her trip, capturing scenes of everyday life along the historic East Coast. Abbott explained the reason for the trip in a prospectus written after the trip concluded-“We wanted to capture visually the character of an historic section of the United States, its beauties and incongruities and all. If visible evidences of the past survived, we wanted to photograph them before bulldozers and derricks moved in.”
