The Continuity of Context: Five Artists in Dialogue with Cheekwood’s Collection

For the Fall 2018 exhibition, Cheekwood has invited Tennessee-based and regional artists to collapse the notion of contemporary and bring to the fore the ever-evolving cycle of art production and the tropes that have remained consistent throughout time. Alicia Henry, Alex Lockwood and Vadis Turner, all Nashville artists, will be producing new work responding to pieces in our permanent collection. Jeremiah Ariaz and Jack Spencer’s photographs will be presented alongside the John and Margaret Hill Collection, which explores myths about the American West. Showcasing the work of living artists tackling similar conceptual and visual conversations demonstrates the enduring relevance of themes and so, the exhibition endeavors to initiate a dialogue between historic and contemporary art and continue a cycle of creative inspiration and response.
