Hearts of Our People: Native Women Artists

Jun 2 2019 - Aug 18 2019

Women have long been the creative force behind Native American art, from ancient pottery to virtual reality. This first large exhibition celebrating the achievements of Native women artists features more than 100 masterworks ranging across time, place, and media, including a fully restored and painted El Camino, 17th-century clothing made for Chief Powhatan, and a 19th-century coat created to summon caribou to a hunter. Presented in close cooperation with leading Native women artists and Native art scholars, the exhibition showcases both the historical and the contemporary, the innovative and captivating works deeply tied to ancestors and for generations to come.
