The Wende Museum

Culver City, CA

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, a circle of 38 Moscow-based artists painted 234 iconic works to be printed as posters, but only a handful of them were actually made into posters. The paintings, in the collection of the Wende Museum, sketch a critical, sometimes highly ironic, picture of communism in general and of Soviet history in particular, documenting the population’s fading trust in the system during the last years of the Soviet Union. The collection will be supplemented by glasnost- and perestroika-era posters.
