Palm Springs Art Museum

Palm Springs, CA

One of the twentieth century’s great documentary photographers, Walker Evans is known for his photographic depictions of communities throughout the United States during the Great Depression.

Evans’s photographs have masterful clarity, yet his compositions are also richly evocative of specific places and the families who lived there. This selection includes images from his 1971 portfolio titled The Seeing-Eye Men. Others, such as those of hand-painted New York signs, bear witness to the changing façades and attitudes of an aging city.
