Aug 29 2018 - Dec 16 2018

Expressions Unbound celebrates the recent gift of American Outsider art to Tufts University from Andrew, A76, F77, and Linda Safran. The collection of 38 artworks brings together some of the foremost self-taught artists of the 20th century, including William Hawkins, Thornton Dial, Sr., Howard Finster, Bessie Harvey, Purvis Young, Mary T. Smith, and Jimmy Lee Sudduth. Assemblage, painting, sculpture, and drawings are all featured as exemplars of this collection, centered around art practices that developed through locally sourced traditions and crafts. This gift marks one of the Art Galleries' largest single-collection contributions to date and notably expands and diversifies Tufts University's Permanent Collection for current and future scholars.
