Dark Matter: Joel Otterson

For the past 30 years, Joel Otterson has made sculpture that combines aspects of domestic handicraft with traditional sculptural materials. His practice is aligned with feminist thinking, queer aesthetics, and American traditions. Striving for beauty and wonderment, Dark Matter will feature new sculptural work produced in 2018 at the Kohler Co. factory in the Foundry as part of the Arts/Industry residency program. Additionally, sculptures made from exotic hardwoods, Persian carpets, and luxurious upholstery fabrics will be shown within a space defined by large, translucent, textile tapestries sewn by Otterson in his Los Angeles studio.
