Inside the Beehive: the Art of Garen Bedrossian

Garen Bedrossian’s paintings and sculptures question the relationship of humans and their environment. In a fascinating project, the artist partnered with honey bee colonies, a highly organized and efficient society, to create unique works of art. The artist made a series of small brightly-colored paintings and placed them in bee hives for a prolonged period of time. Bees covered the art with their own waxwork thus contributing to the creation of an artwork. A series of these fascinating collaborative works will be presented at the exhibition. Also included are photographs, paintings, and sculptures.

Honeybee colony loss has soared in recent years while humans depend on bees as pollinators to raise crops. Garen Bedrossian paintings aim to remind us that collaboration with, and respect for, nature is key to human survival.

Garen Bedrossian is an abstract expressionist artist born in Armenia and now residing in Canada. Bedrossian received professional training at the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, launching a creative career both in Russia and in his homeland of Armenia. To escape ideological and political constraints, he emigrated to Canada where he continues to create drawings, prints, paintings and sculptures.
