Our culture is full of discussions around managing the ever-important “first impression”—that first encounter with a new person, place, thing, or idea, when opinions are often hastily formed. First Impressions: Prints from the Anderson Collection casts a wide net across the concept of the “first impression.
Individual artworks can provide artists, viewers, and collectors alike with multiple opportunities for their own firsts. Within the realm of fine art printmaking, every sheet bearing a printed image is called an impression, and among the firsts revealed in First Impressions are examples of artists making their first project at a print workshop, their first use of a motif or technique that will later prove ubiquitous within their oeuvre, and the first in a series of related works.
