Over the course of the year, art by Otagaki Rengetsu will be on exhibit. Rengetsu (1791- 1875) was a Japanese potter, painter and poet who defied artistic and cultural hierarchies and whose achievements have had lasting impact. She was an acclaimed patron saint of the arts and a celebrity of Kyoto’s cultural life. Against odds, Rengetsu was able to transcend tragedy and overcome adversity. Please join us in admiring her work, and her perseverance.
