The Touch of the Butterfly: Whistler and His Influence

James Abbott McNeill Whistler (American, 1834–1903) was one of the most innovative artists of his day. He combined an impressionist sensibility with a fervent admiration of all things Japanese, making his art unlike any of his contemporaries. Many artists studied with him, most notably Walter Sickert and Joseph Pennell. But Whistler's most lasting contribution may well be in the area of printmaking. He chose unusual papers and experimented with printing techniques. This exhibition will feature prints from the Johnson’s steller collection of works by Whistler, his students, and his friends.
