Tammie Rubin: Solo Exhibition

Exhibition Website

Nov 17 2018 - Jan 10 2019

Through her investigation of the tensions between the readymade and the handcrafted object, Tammi Ruben utilizes found objects, appropriating their familiar shapes, and making them into unfamiliar relics: surreal, dark, playful and sensual.

This new body of work investigates Rubin's family narratives concerning The Great Migration. Between 1910 and 1970 more than 6 million African-Americans moved from the rural south to urban Midwest, Western, and Eastern locations. Her recent move from the Midwest to Austin, TX spurred an interest to utilize her own family’s narratives of moving from Mississippi and Tennessee, to Chicago and Milwaukee, to parallel their journeys with historical markers that include many African-American migration stories.
