Berkshire Museum

Pittsfield, MA

From a tiny hummingbird in flight to an enormous swirling storm cloud, photographs of some of the world’s most astounding phenomena are on view in the National Geographic exhibition Rarely Seen.

Inspired by the book National Geographic Rarely Seen: Photographs of the Extraordinary, the exhibition features 50 striking images made by some of the world’s finest photographers of places, events, and natural occurrences seldom seen by human eyes. The photographs capture unbelievable moments, natural wonders, and extraordinary objects from the far reaches of the globe.

The stunning photographs that comprise the exhibition are divided into categories: Phenomena, Life, Places, Objects, and Moments. Among the images that visitors will explore are depictions of thousands of king penguins congregating in the Antarctic; a mysterious temple complex in Cambodia; the amazing Hundred Dragons Elevator in China’s Hunan Province; and a hummingbird in flight facing off against a tiny green snake.

Whether or not you go, National Geographic Rarely Seen: Photographs of the Extraordinary is a dazzling photography book of visual wonders, shot by some of the world's finest photographers. This book reveals a world very few will have the chance to see for themselves. This New York Times bestseller features striking images of places, events, natural phenomena, and manmade heirlooms seldom seen by human eyes.

It's all here: 30,000-year-old cave art sealed from the public; animals that are among the last of their species on Earth; volcanic lightning; giant crystals that have grown to more than 50 tons; the engraving inside Abraham Lincoln's pocket watch. With an introduction by National Geographic photographer Stephen Alvarez, whose work has taken him from the Peruvian Andes to the deepest caves of Papua New Guinea, Rarely Seen captures once-in-a-lifetime moments, natural wonders, and little-seen objects from the far reaches of the globe.
